The Practice of Patience:

Life Lessons from Hansel and Gretel

Patience might be a virtue, but let’s face it—it’s also a test. And who better to hand out pop quizzes on patience than puppies? Recently, my life got a little more exciting, chaotic, and yes, messy, when I became the foster mom to Hansel and Gretel, two 14-week-old bundles of fur, energy, and mischief.

These two pups are teaching me more about patience than any mindfulness retreat ever could. Hansel, my little renegade, has a special talent for finding trouble (and my favorite shoes). Gretel, sweet but curious, is right behind him, usually with an innocent “Wasn’t me!” look in her eyes. Together, they have turned my home into an adorable training ground for patience, love, and the occasional deep sigh.

Why Patience Matters (and What Happens When You Run Out)

Patience isn’t just a nicety—it’s essential for your health and well-being. When impatience takes over, your body reacts like it’s facing a saber-toothed tiger. Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline spike, putting you in fight-or-flight mode. Over time, this can lead to some serious health problems:

  • Heart Strain: Impatience ramps up your blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart disease.
  • Digestive Issues: Stress can wreak havoc on your stomach, leading to discomfort and even long-term gut problems.
  • Immune Suppression: Chronic stress weakens your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to illness.
  • Mental Exhaustion: Impatience fuels anxiety, frustration, and burnout, making it harder to focus and stay present.

I have felt the effects of impatience myself—like when Hansel decided my gorgeous living room rug was an appropriate bathroom substitute, or when Gretel thought my laptop charger was a chew toy. In those moments, I have had to remind myself to breathe, regroup, and remember that they are just puppies doing what puppies do.

 Puppies: My Little Zen Masters

Hansel and Gretel are not just chaos creators; they are also patience professors. Every time they test my limits; they give me an opportunity to practice staying grounded. They remind me that patience is not about tolerating the moment—it is about embracing it.

Take potty training, for example. It is not glamorous, but it is a process. When I focus on the bigger picture—helping them grow into well-behaved, loving dogs—every accident becomes less frustrating and more of a lesson (even if that lesson involves a lot of paper towels).

Life, like puppies, is full of messes and mishaps. Patience means meeting those moments with grace, humor, and the understanding that growth takes time—whether it’s a puppy learning where to potty or a person learning to navigate life’s challenges.

 The Ripple Effect of Patience

What I have learned from Hansel and Gretel is that patience doesn’t just help you; it helps everyone around you. When I stay calm, they feel calmer. If I lose my cool, their energy spikes, and chaos ensues. It is a clear reminder that patience is an energetic frequency that others can sense and respond to.

This applies to all areas of life. Whether you are parenting, partnering, or dealing with a coworker who just won’t stop talking about their weekend, your ability to stay patient creates a ripple effect of calm and connection.

 Practicing Patience Daily

Here are a few ways I have been practicing patience (with Hansel and Gretel, and beyond):

  1. Pause and Breathe: When frustration bubbles up, I take a moment to breathe deeply. This simple act resets the nervous system and helps me respond instead of re-act.
  2. Reframe the Moment: Instead of focusing on the inconvenience, I look at the lesson. What is this teaching me? How can I grow from this?
  3. Seek Energy Healing: Clearing trapped emotions and energetic imbalances has been transformative for me—and it can be for you too.
  4. Celebrate Progress: Whether it’s Hansel learning to sit or me staying calm during a puppy mishap, I make a point to acknowledge and celebrate small wins.

How Energy Healing Can Help You Cultivate Patience

As a Master Code Practitioner, I use Emotion Code, Body Code, and Belief Code to help clients uncover and release the subconscious blocks that make patience feel so hard to achieve.

  • Emotion Code: Releases trapped emotions like frustration or anxiety that fuel impatience.
  • Body Code: Addresses physical imbalances, such as nervous system overstimulation, which make it hard to stay calm.
  • Belief Code: Helps eliminate limiting beliefs like “I don’t have time for this” into empowering ones that support patience and resilience.

Through these modalities, I help my clients move from being reactive to feeling calm, centered, and in control. It is a process that not only transforms your relationship with patience but also your relationship with yourself and others.

 Final Thoughts

Patience is a practice, not a destination. Whether you are navigating the chaos of life with puppies, managing a busy schedule, or simply trying to stay present, patience is a gift that keeps on giving. If you are ready to uncover what is holding you back from living with patience and ease, I would love to support you. Together, we can turn impatience into empowerment—one paw print (or step) at a time.

To your healing!
